Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

January 21, 2013

Reflections from President Sublett

It is indeed an honor to join millions across our nation as we pause each year to reflect upon the unmatched legacy and contributions of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Union Institute & University is very proud to support the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars Program, an important feature of our Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies program. The MLK program is a living example of Union’s ongoing legacy and commitment to doctoral education. Attracting committed students from across the nation to engage with faculty and make meaningful change, Union is working to expand the world’s understanding of the legacy of Dr. King’s vision, contributions, and encouragement for all.

We find his message today is as poignant as it was in the 1960s. Among Dr. King’s many lasting quotes, I’ve always gravitated to this one: Faith is taking the first step when you can’t even see the staircase. In my own leadership journey, that statement has given me inspiration and hope for moving our university forward in positive directions. It has given inspiration and courage to a new generation of Americans serving a nation that desires to celebrate the very best of the human spirit.

I express appreciation to Union’s Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars as well as our faculty, staff, and administrators who contribute their intellect, talents, and determination to be agents of change in their communities and places of work. Dr. King gave all of us hope for a better future, and hope that each of us will contribute to the betterment of our communities each day. Union’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars continue to give voice to Dr. King’s lasting vision.

Thank you for joining with me to remember Dr. King’s important work on this very important day.

Roger H. Sublett, Ph.D.
