The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that there is currently a 35% increase in nationwide demand for substance abuse counselors. Union Institute & University offers an Addiction Studies specialization (part of the Psychology & Human Development concentration) within our Bachelor of Arts program. This 30-credit specialization gives graduates the knowledge and skills they need to pursue a career in this growing and rewarding field.
The Addiction Studies specialization and the B.A. degree provides students with the educational credits and 2,000 hours toward the work experience requirements for certification by state licensing boards as a Substance Abuse Counselors. The Bachelor of Arts curriculum meets the substance abuse counseling training requirements of The Vermont Alcohol and Drug Abuse Certification Board (VADACB). Approval is currently being sought in other New England states and beyond. At the present time, students should check with their own state boards for information about their requirements.
