Spotlight: Academic Search Premier

The Academic Search Premier database from EBSCO is one of the most well-known and respected research databases. It is a large, multidisciplinary database containing 4,600+ journals in the fields of psychology, education, leadership, business, arts, sciences, and more.

The UI&U Library lists Academic Search Premier as one of our six recommended databases for beginning your research--and with good reason, as a search in this database will find articles on almost any topic. The database also offers numerous ways to refine your search, such as limiting results by date, peer-reviewed status, document type and more. The database toolbar includes options to print, e-mail, view citation, export to RefWorks, and create a direct link.

To access the Academic Search Premier database, 1) go to the UI&U Library homepage, 2) click the “Articles & Databases” tab, 3) click the “databases by subject” link, and 4) open the Academic Search Premier database.

Spotlight: Dissertations, Final Products & Culminating Studies

Did you know that the UI&U Library provides access to over a million online dissertations and theses? The documents are in PDF format and can be found in either ProQuest Dissertation & Theses or the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. Links to both databases can be found on the library homepage’s dissertations tab or the databases by subject page.

Dissertations and theses are a wonderful resource for bachelors through doctoral-level students. Dissertation bibliographies tend to be extensive, so if you find one good dissertation, you can use the bibliography to find additional articles and books on your topic. In fact, the more difficult your research topic, the more useful “bibliography prospecting” becomes.

The UI&U Library also archives the final work of many previous UI&U students, including: bachelor-level Culminating Studies, masters-level Final Products, and Dissertations. These final document can be found in our ebook catalog (this page will show you how to format the search query).

As you begin writing your final work, it can be helpful to read the work of earlier UI&U students. The more you read these documents, the easier it will be to format and write your own final document. You will also want to check the catalog and dissertation databases to ensure that you have selected an original research topic that has not been written about--the last thing you want to do is start your research and writing from scratch!

I hope that you will find these databases to be both useful and empowering. After all, these alums completed the daunting task of writing their final document, and so can you!

One of the most respected library databases, the SAGE Premier database contains over 645 peer-reviewed journals in Business, Criminal Justice, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Medicine, including new or expanded coverage for the Journal of Human Lactation, Qualitative Inquiry and many other sought-after, high-impact journals. The coverage for most journals is 1999 to the present, making SAGE Premier an excellent resource for current research. The UI&U Library recommends SAGE Premier as one of the top nine multidisciplinary databases.

Spotlight: Opposing Viewpoints Database

All too often, these opinions are split along traditional socio-economic lines without being thoroughly researched or considered. However, critical thinking and civil political discourse requires us to actively explore and consider alternative perspectives.

Whether you are researching a topic out of personal interest or required to include an opposing perspective in an academic paper, the UI&U Library’s Opposing Viewpoints in Context database can help you find the necessary background information. The database has topic pages on a variety of controversial issues such as gun control, abortion, same-sex marriage, capital punishment, nuclear energy, immigration, and more. Each topic page includes opposing viewpoints, reference materials, historical information, journal articles, and statistics that you can use to begin your research.

Google Scholar@UI&U is a great tool for kick-starting your research. It allows you to simultaneously search many of the UI&U Library’s article databases as well as web-based scholarly resources such as legal opinions, online repositories, and other university websites.
Many students love Google Scholar@UI&U because it combines the search functionality and familiar interface of Google with the high quality, scholarly resources within the UI&U Library. Google Scholar@UI& U also has many helpful tools for researchers, including “cited by” links, date limiters, RefWorks and Zotero citation tool integration, preformatted citations, email alerts for new articles, author profiles, and other search features.
