Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning and development. (Palomba & Banta, Assessment Essentials: Planning, Implementing, and Improving Assessment in Higher Education, 1999)
Union Institute & University is committed to providing academically rigorous programs that engage, enlighten, and empower students at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral level. To achieve that goal, faculty and administrators at UI&U are implementing a comprehensive assessment program that ensures continuous improvement in curriculum, learning outcomes, and student services.
The Office for Institutional Effectiveness and the Assessment Coordination Team are responsible for organizing, implementing, and sustaining a university-wide program to assess learning outcomes. The resources within this site exist to facilitate effective assessment throughout the university and are intended for all members of the academic community.
Union Institute & University places a high value on its principle of academic quality. We express our commitment to “academic excellence and…institutional quality through continuous assessment and review of programs, processes, policies, and outcomes.” To ensure the highest level of academic quality, faculty and administrators are working together at all levels to promote a culture of assessment that identifies learning outcomes and assesses student success in achieving those outcomes. An important part of the culture of assessment is the collective review of student materials and artifacts.
University and course learning outcomes are present in all syllabi. Faculty will assess learning outcomes at both the major/concentration and university level. Student materials will be assessed within programs or included among a random sample for university outcomes. Those student materials remain anonymous and will have no impact whatsoever on a student’s evaluation, grade, GPA or transcript. Individual student work becomes part of a group review in order that faculty may review learning outcomes and ensure curriculum improvement.
