Dr. Buehler’s career path has been broad and varied. He spent 35 years working in public school education as a teacher, business manager, Director of Science K-12, Director of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act K-12, Director of Magnet School Curriculum and Development, HS Principal, and the last 20 years in education, serving as a Superintendent of Schools. He served as the Superintendent of four school districts in New York State and retired as the Chief School Officer of the Oswego City School District. Immediately following retirement he was recruited to the position of Visiting Professor in the School of Education at the State University of New York at Oswego. Dr. Buehler served in this position for 6 years where designed and taught a curriculum for developing critical thinking skills which the University adopted as a required course for ESL students. Concurrently he served as a Mentor under contract for Doctorial Candidates at the Union Institute and University. At the present time, he now serves as a core faculty member in the Graduate School of this same University.
Academic degrees include an earned Ph.D., C.A.S., M.S., and B.S. University experience at both the undergraduate and graduate level involves designing and teaching courses in a multitude of areas including; The Negotiation Process, School Law, Models of Education, Reflective Teaching Methods, Integrated Teaching Methods, and Critical Thinking about Home, School and Community. Dr. Buehler has had many papers published in state, national, and professional journals and has been a frequent presenter at local and state meetings and conventions. He has also facilitated many workshops for teachers, administrators, school superintendents, and boards of education.
Dr. Buehler has held many leadership positions. He has served as President of the international chapter of PDK, RSR, PHS, the UI&U Graduate Alumni Board, and Team Sheldon. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the BSA, Arts and Culture for Oswego County, COPE, the United Way, the Gouverneur Foundation, the North Country Study Council, UI&U IAAB, and for many community and non-profit organizations.
With a life long interest in a variety of avocations, he has owned and ridden motorcycles, built and driven race cars, built engines and hot rods and currently owns two early Fords which have been featured in many national publications. He is a land speed racer and holds a class D international competition license. Dr. Buehler is also an accomplished metal artist having sold commissioned pieces for the past 35 years. At the present time his work can be viewed at the Artisans’ Loft at the Landing at Pultneyville in New York where he is the exclusive metal artist.
Dr. Buehler and his spouse Charlotte, a retired school psychologist, enjoy family gatherings with their 3 children, their families, and their 4 grandchildren. Racing and car events provide traveling experiences as well as their planned national and international vacation travel. Hiking, canoeing, kayaking and other outdoor activities are enjoyed in the warmer months while reading, wine making, cooking, and community service are enjoyed in the cooler months of the year.
