President Emerita of Goddard College and Poet in Residence for Pacific Grove, California, Barbara Mossberg joins the Union Institute and University community for the Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies, in Ethical and Creative Leadership, as an activist educational leader and academic entrepreneur who weaves being a poet, lecturer, scholar, author, leadership consultant, and actress into a career that spans college and university teaching and academic administration, community and national service, and federal and international appointments.
Dr. Mossberg earned a B.A. from UCLA, and a M.A. from Indiana University before completing her Ph.D. studies in Literature and Linguistics, also at Indiana University.
A dedicated and prizewinning teacher (known as "Dr. B"), with emphasis on promoting creativity and expression for greater consciousness and conscience in how humanity treats each other and the earth, Dr. Mossberg has also received international recognition for her scholarship and creative work in the interdisciplinary fields of American Studies, global studies, and the role of arts and humanities in public policy for civil and human rights, environmental legislation, war and peace, and leadership. For her commitment to scholarship and teaching in service of social ideals, she has been inducted into the John Muir High School Alumni Hall of Fame, as well as been appointed resident poet for the city of Pacific Grove, and in such capacities seeks to "walk the talk," invoking local communities in a civic integrated language arts curriculum of hope and empowerment.
