Professor Maples holds a Master of Arts in security ctudies (Homeland Defense and Security) from the United States Naval Post Graduate School and a Master of Science in emergency services administration from California State University, Long Beach. He obtained a Bachelors of Arts in political science, with a minor in public administration from California State University, Bakersfield.
Professor Maples is a California Highway Patrol (CHP) captain and currently serves as the commander of the CHP's Counterterrorism and Threat Awareness Section. Prior to this assignment, he was the commander of the CHP's Emergency Operations Section. The department's emergency operations center, the Emergency Notification and Tactical Alert Center (ENTAC), falls within his command and he currently serves as the State of California's AMBER Alert program coordinator.
