It Pays to Go Back
I have always worked in facilities management ever since I received my associate's degree from Cincinnati State almost 20 years ago. But I was stuck at a mid-level supervisor position, never able to move to the next level of management. I felt lost and lacked the needed focus and discipline to succeed.
But then I attended an education fair and learned about Union Institute & University.
Initially, I wasn't sure about going back to school – something about sitting in a classroom each week just isn't my thing – but my wife encouraged me to try it out.
It turned out to be a great fit. Union was flexible and I loved the ability to help design a degree plan that matched my style of learning. I don't require a lot of supervision and Union gave me the freedom to complete my degree at my own pace. I was able to schedule my assignments around my work and play schedule.
With my wife's support and encouragement I completed my bachelor's degree in 2007.
And, recently I got a new job as a business services manager for a major insurance company. I manage people, processes, and projects from a senior management level, a position I would not have been able to get without my degree.
It wasn't easy, but returning to school was one of the best decisions I ever made (next to asking my wife to marry me). Union has given me confidence, strengthened my self-esteem, and encouraged me to continue to seek opportunities to learn and improve myself.
It paid big time when I decided to go back.
