UI&U History
Union Institute & University was formed in 1964 and has undergone a handful of name changes and expansions over its history. After 45 years, the Mission and Vision of this non-traditional university has remained focused on empowering adults through flexible and interdisciplinary educational options. Union Institute & University is steeped in social justice and remains commited to the core principles of service within local, regional, and global communities, academic integrity, and the celebration of diversity.
Union Institute & University is a premier adult distance learning center, providing non-traditional degree programs, in online and low residency formats. Undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees are offered at 6 academic centers across the country.
