The feminist movement, one of the great social movements of the twentieth century, has produced an explosion of scholarship. The new interdisciplinary field of women’s studies focused on the hidden role of women in history, law, science, literature, philosophy, politics, art, business and religion—as well as those social and political constructs that excluded them.
Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies deepens and expands the examination of biological sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and how these have been shaped by institutions, political and cultural practices, historical contexts, artistic expressions, belief systems, science and technology, and work environments. Our adult students explore and evaluate the intersections of gendered identities with other categories, such as race/ethnicity, economic class, age, able-bodiedness, religion, nationality and geographic location. Learners can choose low-residency options in Vermont that meet in regular seven day colloquiums, on weekends, or can participate in online options and online seminars.
Students in this concentration will graduate with strong critical thinking skills, experience with oral and written communication, and applying their knowledge. Their interdisciplinary education will prepare them to pursue careers in many fields, including the arts, business, education, health care, media, politics and law, history and social work. Other students may go on to graduate school in fields such as administration, anthropology, arts, counseling, philosophy, psychology, public health, public policy and more.
