Writing and Literature

Writing and LiteratureFollowing Vermont’s long literary tradition, our concentration in Literature and Writing focuses on your personal vision and passion.  Learners completing the program gain a strong sense of who they are as writers, as well as a sense of the broader context of literature.

Some of our alumni have gone on to publish. Many have pursued teaching or continued on to graduate programs. Few fields offer so broad and inclusive a view of the world, and our personalized guidance can help you focus on relevant realms. A concentration in Literature and Writing provides preparation for careers in law, human services, education, and business. Whatever your goals, you will leave with a deep sense of the writing process and expansive knowledge of the world of literature.

UI&U has worked with writers for over 40 years.  Whether you are just beginning, like many of our learners, or, like others, have already published, experienced faculty will work with you on fiction, poetry, memoir, creative nonfiction, essays, journalism, and other forms of writing.  The study and enjoyment of literature—American, English, European, Asian, contemporary, and classical—enriches understanding of the human condition and the forces that shape us through history, including gender, ethnicity, culture, and economic class.
