Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies

Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies

Union Institute & University’s low-residency doctoral program is built on progressive thinking and rigorous academic study. Students move through the program as members of cohorts, small academic communities formed at each academic residency to promote sustained interaction among students and between students and faculty. Residencies take place each January and July in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Academic Residencies

While constant interaction among students and faculty takes place during the entire calendar year via the Union Institute & University online learning platform, bi-annual academic residencies provide face-to-face contact for nine (9) days each term. Residencies include the following activities:

  1. Learning: The beginning of a required sequence of seminars completed at a distance through online learning activities, email, and telephone. Learning includes Conference Day, in which students and faculty present their scholarship and promote discourse around intellectual, professional, and social issues.
  2. Engagement with the program themes: Engagement includes presentations by leading scholars and creative activities that include principle stances toward social justice, engaging difference, and creativity while uniting theory and practice.
  3. Community building: New cohort orientation, evening faculty conversations, one-on-one meetings between faculty and students are examples.
  4. Scholar in Residence: At each residency, a noted scholar is invited to conduct a keynote lecture and engage in more informal discussions with our students.
