Transferring Credits
Up to 12 semester hour credits (the equivalent of four (4) doctoral level courses) from a regionally accredited university are eligible to be reviewed by an admissions committee for approval of transfer. The transfer courses must have been completed in the past five (5) years with an equivalent grade of “B” or above. Courses applied toward an earned master’s degree are not eligible to be reviewed for transfer.

A Transfer Credit Petition Form, transcripts, syllabi and all written assignments for courses considered for transfer must be submitted as part of the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership or Higher Education application package. Union Institute & University reserves the right to apply, or not apply, acceptable transfer credit toward its degree requirements. In no case will transfer credit negate the 36 month time in program length. Union Institute & University operates on a 6 month term system; therefore, courses taken at colleges operating on the quarter system are converted to semester credit hours.

Admissions Criteria
To successfully apply to the UI&U Doctor of Education program, applicants must have completed

  • An earned master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. While it is expected that most applicants will hold master’s degrees in education, individuals with master’s degree in related fields, such as business, health sciences, engineering, and other professional areas as well as arts and sciences may also be considered.
  • A minimum of one graduate research course appropriate for an individual preparing to begin a doctoral study program.

The complete application will include the following:

  • Completed application form, signed and dated by the applicant (Apply online)
  • Application fee (current fee is $50.00, non-refundable)
  • Official transcripts from all previously attended postsecondary educational institutions
  • Three (3) letters of reference, written by individuals able to attest to the applicant's knowledge and experience in the field of education. At least one of these letters must be submitted by an individual with a doctorate in the field of education or a related field.
  • An application portfolio, to include:
    • Cover letter requesting consideration for admission
    • Current resume/curriculum vitae
    • Please write an intellectual autobiography of approximately five pages with a minimum of five references using APA format.  The essay should indicate factors which led you to pursue your  Ed.D.—including the intellectual, academic, theoretical and practical dimensions of your biography.  Your references should primarily include scholars, books, and well-known professionals in the field, indicating how these are informing your current thinking.  Personal references, such as influences of family and friends, are usually too individualized for the purposes of this essay; however, if these influences play a significant role intellectually in your continuing engagement in your doctoral  studies, they may be included as brief references. This essay will also serve as the foundational reflective essay which will be the basis for three subsequent essays reflecting your progress through the Ed.D.

The essay should deal with the following
      • Your current level of preparation.
        •  How do you anticipate that your continued studies will affect your current practice in the field?
        • How does both your current practice and your anticipated study  relate to issues of leadership and social justice?
        •  What professional and personal contexts do you bring to the course of study, and how are these likely to assist you in learning?  What limitations may you have in this regard, especially with regard to  social justice concerns.
        • How have your professional and personal contexts shaped your identity?
      • The outcomes you anticipate from completing the program
        • What are your aspirations for the program?
        • What areas would you like to refine?
        • How might your enhanced scholarship  augment your personal and professional life and that of others whom your work affects?
        • How do your personal goals align with the Ed.D. program’s goals?
      • Your life beyond the Ed.D. Program
        • How will this program contribute to and shape your future?
        • How might you use your learning to contribute to your existing communities?
