Doctor of Education Program: The Art of Leadership for Social Justice
Ed.D. Since 1964, Union Institute & University has been at the forefront of providing socially relevant doctoral education for adult students. Continuing this tradition, UI&U’s Doctor of Education program offers the Ed.D. degree with specializations in Educational Leadership (Pre-K through 12) and Higher Education. As a whole, the Doctor of Education program features an emphasis on ethics and social justice. The Ed.D. program is uniquely designed to align with the needs, experiences, and interests of mid-career professionals. Those who seek a low-residency doctoral experience can engage in advanced scholarship while balancing professional and family commitments.

Cohort Model and Learning Community within the Doctor of Education Program
Students advance through the Doctor of Education program in a small cohort of fellow scholar-practitioners. Seminars are delivered online, in web-hosted meetings, as well as face-to-face during annual residencies in Cincinnati, Ohio. Students benefit from UI&U’s experienced Ed.D. faculty and a collaborative learning environment, developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills they need to advance their careers.

Ethics and Social Justice within the Doctor of Education Program
Issues of ethics and social justice are integrated into the entire Doctor of Education program. Students and faculty engage, in complex and thoughtful ways, the implications of alternative perspectives on ethics and social justice hold for their roles as scholar-practitioners in the field of education and for the institutions that they will serve. Students will acquire the following professional dispositions toward justice:

  • respect for value pluralism
  • consensual decision-making
  • adherence to democratic processes
  • commitment to the use of reason and evidence
