Within the Master of Arts with a concentration in Education, students explore the roots of modern approaches to education through classic and contemporary critical analysis.  Real-world problems are considered through the lenses of historical and philosophical viewpoints.

Students contribute descriptions of their own experiences—as students or as educators—to online discussions about educational philosophies and ethics.  Whether you are an aspiring community educator, a stay-at-home dad or mom, an international consultant, a non-traditional or a traditional classroom teacher, this concentration can be adapted to meet your needs.  The only requirement is interest in delving deeply into questions about how and why we educate.

Education faculty members are qualified to support a broad range of fields of study, including:

  • Comparative education
  • Early childhood education
  • Educational leadership
  • Education for social justice
  • Environmental education
  • Global education
  • Museum education
  • Online education
  • Place-based education
  • Science education

Please note that the M.A. Program does not directly support teacher certification, but UI&U offers other programs that do.  If you are interested in pursuing teacher licensure, please talk with an admissions counselor about teacher licensure options at UI&U.

Some of our students anticipate pursuing doctoral studies in education, while others are interested in exploring education as a possible career path or broadening their knowledge in a current career.  No matter what your goal, our faculty members and career counseling service are ready to support you.
