Master of Education - Vermont

Program Overview
Master's of Education Traveling from neighboring states, distant corners of America, and as far away as Moscow and Hong Kong, learners at Union Institute & University's Montpelier, Vermont Center are a diverse group with a common interest in the mission and values of UI&U. The M.Ed. residencies are held one week in February and one week in July, at the center. Studying and sharing of ideas takes place in a community of learners who share similar interests.

Union Institute & University’s Vermont-based M.Ed. Program utilizes a brief residency model that combines independent study with face-to-face meetings, academic residencies, seminars, and workshops. Learners meet with faculty during the residencies to plan their course of study, and to plan specific independent studies. Learners’ study plans are built around their own questions and interests, and incorporate programmatic requirements.

Thirty-six to forty-eight credit hours are required for graduation, including participation in four residencies. Each learner completes a Master’s thesis in his/her final term. Each learner works collaboratively with faculty to develop an individualized program of study and research in the selected area of specialization.

Unique Benefits

  • Union Institute & University has been educating adults for 45 years
  • Learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom, via independent study and residencies that are scheduled to fit your busy life. UI&U is not strictly an online university, nor is it entirely classroom-based education. We are focused on providing a graduate education that can be balanced with career, familial, and personal commitments.
  • You determine your area of specialization; if you are interested in licensure, you will build the state requirements into your program.
  • Standard entry examinations such as GREs are not required, although learners working toward licensure are required by the State of Vermont to take Praxis examinations.
  • Up to six (6) graduate credits earned at other accredited institutions may be accepted.  Learners enrolled in School Counseling may apply up to twelve (12) graduate credits. A grade of B (or equivalent) or better must have been earned in each transferred course.  Courses contributing to another degree may not be transferred.
