The following are typical but not mandatory sequences of study in the M.Ed. degree program at Union Institute & University. Learners may begin the program in either the spring or summer term.
Professional Development Programs
Summer I: core seminars, workshops, presentations, and study planning
Fall I: independent study
Spring I: research study groups, workshops, presentations, and study planning, followed by independent study (possibly action research at one’s own site)
Summer II: core seminars, workshops, presentations, study planning, and thesis proposal
Fall II: independent study, often beginning the thesis or research for the thesis
Spring II: research study groups, workshops, presentations, study planning, completion of the thesis
Licensure Programs
Summer I: core seminars, workshops, presentations, and study planning
Fall I: studies related to competencies required for licensure, 30 hours pre- practicum, including action research
Spring I: studies related to competencies required for licensure, 30 hours pre- practicum
Summer II: core seminars, workshops, presentations, study planning, and thesis proposal
Fall II: internship, integration of theory and practice through journal and reflective essays, completion of the portfolio
Spring II: completing the thesis
(Licensure in School Counseling requires at least two additional terms of study.)
