Admission Requirements and Process

Applications for admission to Union’s Master of Science in Organizational Leadership program are accepted from those with bachelor’s degrees from regionally accredited institutions who seek to develop their leadership and management capacity and skills.

Master’s in Organizational Leadership Admissions Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0
  • 3-5 years of work experience
  • Ability to:
    • Study, research, analyze, write, and orally present at a graduate level
    • Problem solve, make reasoned arguments, and practically apply learning
    • Work in a distance learning setting that utilizes technology to research, dialogue and collaborate
    • Take ownership of and manage your graduate course of study
    • Actively participate in a diverse and challenging professional learning community

Candidates who have the potential to work at the graduate level, but need to further develop their writing and critical thinking skills, or do not have a 3.0 GPA and/or 3-5 years or work experience may be considered for admittance to the program. Such exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis and may require additional coursework beyond the 12 core courses.

Master of Science in Organizational Leadership Admissions Process:

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)are not required.

Master of Science in Organizational Leadership application

Those seeking admittance are to submit a Union Institute & University application form accompanied by:

  • Transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended
  • A 3-4 page (double-spaced) Statement of Purpose. Please include:
    • A description of your leadership qualities, skills, and professional experiences that qualify you to be accepted into the MSOL program
    • Information about how the MSOL degree will enable you to grow as a professional leader and engaged citizen. Include how the degree will advance your career and active role in the community
    • An outline of a socially responsive professional project rooted in a work issue and social concern that will be developed and completed during your course of study
    • A discussion of the challenges of participating in a graduate program and how you will balance academic, work, and personal responsibilities
    • A descriptive summary outlining your civic activities, social concerns, and any other relevant material

Two letters of recommendation. Please ask your recommender to give examples of:

  • Your leadership qualities and professional experience
  • Your ability to think critically, problem-solve innovatively, and work at a graduate level.

Recommender may write a letter or use this form:

  • A resume outlining your work experience and professional accomplishments.
  • Admission Interview: The final part of the application process is a 45-60 minute phone interview that discusses the core components of your Statement of Purpose and provides an opportunity to ask questions regarding the program.
