Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology

Apply Now for Fall 2010
Applications currently being accepted for Ohio and Vermont-based cohorts.

UI&U Psy.D. FacultyUnion Institute & University’s Doctor of Psychology Program offers the Psy.D. degree with a concentration in clinical psychology, following a practitioner-scholar model. The program’s distributed learning model makes it accessible to working adults who need to balance career, family, and other responsibilities.

Cohort Model
Learners meet together in small cohorts monthly and attend semi-annual Academic Meetings in Cincinnati, Ohio and Brattleboro, Vermont. Courses are delivered both face-to-face and online. Learners benefit from UI&U’s experienced psychology faculty and collaborative learning environment, developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills they need to advance their careers.

Social Justice and Diversity
UI&U emphasizes social justice and diversity in all of its programs. Learners are trained not only to assess and treat mental health problems, but also to understand and treat problems within their sociopolitical context. These include issues related to poverty, violence, substance abuse, racism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression. Learners in the Psy.D. program also become deeply aware of the ethical issues involved in providing psychological services.

Family Psychology Emphasis
The program offers an optional emphasis in family psychology, attending to assessment, research, intervention, consultation, supervision, and ethical and legal issues. Learners are trained in traditional and contemporary models of family therapy and evidence-based practices to provide a range of services within the field of family psychology. Consistent with other components of the program, diversity issues are integrated into each course.

Accreditation
Union Institute & University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. The program’s development was guided by the American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation standards (Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology), but it is not APA accredited. APA accreditation policies require programs to have “sufficient students at each level of matriculation, including candidacy status during the year of its initial application.” The Psy.D. Program plans to apply for APA accreditation when it reaches that stage. For more information, see Accreditation & Licensing.
