Union Institute & University's Continuing Education Program
The Union Institute & University Continuing Education Program provides high quality, educational experiences for psychologists and other professionals in the mental health fields in the greater Cincinnati, Ohio and Brattleboro, Vermont areas, as well as those at a distance. These training workshops are offered throughout the year, both on-ground and online. The Continuing Education Program is directly managed by the Psy.D. program in clinical psychology and is designed to promote and support lifelong learning for psychologists.

The Program’s specific goals are consistent with the larger university’s goals and with APA CE guidelines, which include the following:

  • Provide learning activities specific to professional psychology that integrate practice, education and science;
  • Provide opportunities for psychologists to acquire new knowledge, skill and competencies in current, newly developed, and emerging research, theories and practices;
  • Provide learning activities specifically pertaining to advancing professionals’ understanding and skill in the areas of social relevance, social justice, and cultural competency, enabling them to expand their roles in the public and private sectors of society.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy
Planned for Spring 2012


Time: 9AM-4:30PM (lunch on your own, 12-1)
Cost: 6 CE credits: $90
Description: Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an 8-week, evidence-based program which combines mindfulness and cognitive therapy techniques for the prevention of stress, depression, and anxiety. Through lecture, discussion, and experiential exercises, this full-day workshop will cover the characteristics and components of mindfulness, the structure and the delivery of the MBCT program, discuss the constituents of a mindfulness-based approach to working with clients individually, and explore the role of mindfulness for the clinician.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the structure of the MBCT program.
  2. Identify the cognitive and emotional triggers of relapse in depression.
  3. Describe the role that rumination has in perpetuating negative thoughts and behaviors.
  4. Develop mindfulness-based techniques to help clients de-center from the narrative of negative thoughts and emotions.
  5. Evaluate the role of a personal mindfulness practice for the therapist.

About the Presenter:
Richard Sears Richard Sears, Psy.D., MBA, ABPP, is a board-certified clinical psychologist, who has been practicing and teaching mindfulness for over 25 years. He is director of the Center for Clinical Mindfulness & Meditation and core faculty in the Doctor of Psychology Program at Union Institute & University. He is lead author of Mindfulness in Clinical Practice and Consultation Skills for Mental Health Professionals, and is chief editor of the Journal of Clinical Mindfulness & Meditation.

The Role of Assessment in the Evidence-Based Practice of Psychology

Consumers, insurance companies and practitioners increasingly desire the use of proven, effective treatment interventions for their patients. This informative one-day workshop, facilitated by two clinical psychologists who work extensively with children, will define and examine a variety of Evidenced-Based Practices (EBP) as they apply to the treatment of children. The presenters will focus on the most commonly diagnosed Internalizing and Externalizing disorders, primarily anxiety, depression, ODD and ADHD, as well as treatment of trauma. This advanced workshop will focus on the clinical application of the current research, allowing participants to leave with increased knowledge of the current EBP literature as well as practical clinical skills and resources to utilize with clients.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Define Evidence-based Practices.
  2. Identify EBP’s related to clinical practice with children and adolescents.
  3. Identify EBP’s for issues such as anxiety, depression, behavior disorders, parent-child interaction issues, and treatment of trauma.
  4. Describe how to integrate cultural competence into EBP’s.
  5. Clinicians will be prepared to apply EBP’s within the context of treatment of children.

Jennifer Ossege, Psy.D., earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Xavier University, where concentration of studies was within the field of child psychotherapy. She has worked with children in a variety of placements including residential, crisis stabilization treatment centers, and outpatient therapy. Dr. Ossege currently is engaged in working with children in a private practice setting and is a full-time core faculty member in the Doctor of Psychology Program at Union Institute & University.

Joy McGhee, Psy.D., earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Wright State University, School of Professional Psychology, where she received training with a variety of client populations. Her professional clinical work has included extensive work with children and families in both school and private practice settings providing therapy, assessment and consultation. Currently, Dr. McGhee maintains a private practice, and is a full-time core faculty member in the Doctor of Psychology Program at Union Institute & University.

Refunds
Refunds will be given, less 15% handling fee, upon written cancellation postmarked two weeks prior to the workshop date. No Refunds will be given after that date.
