Forward Your Email
- Union Learners may now forward their email to another account. The process is called a redirect, so it will keep a copy in your learner @email.myunion.edu account as well as sending to your personal account.
To access e-mail, please visit http://webmail.myunion.edu or, you can enable your e-mail client to check the POP3 address.

Initial E-mail Account Login
As a new learner with Union Institute & University, you will automatically receive an e-mail account. In order to take advantage of the many new and interesting capabilities supplied to you by this account, you will need 3 key ingredients:
Once you receive your e-mail address, you can begin using your Outlook Live account. But there are several important differences to note between learner e-mail addresses and faculty/staff addresses. All Learner and Alumni e-mail addresses end with @email.myunion.edu . For example, a learner named John Smith is John.Smith@email.myunion.edu (no, it is not case sensitive). As you may recall, all Faculty and Staff addresses end with @myunion.edu.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is "email" part of my address?
Because our learner e-mail system is 100% hosted by Microsoft, we have to add a "third level" to the address to separate it from Faculty and Staff. This is common practice at many Universities.
Will faculty addresses end with @email.myunion.edu?
No, Microsoft only provides this service to students and alumni, so faculty will continue to use internal Union e-mail systems. Faculty and Staff e-mail addresses end with @myunion.edu.
What is the address, and how do I log on?
To keep things simple, you can go to http://webmail.myunion.edu and it will automatically redirect you to the Microsoft Outlook Live servers. Your Windows Live ID is the same as your e-mail address (for example, john.smith@email.myunion.edu) and your INITIAL password is the first letter of your last name, capitalized, and the last six digits of your Social Security Number. For example, John Smith with an SSN of 123-45-6789 will use the password S456789 the first time he logs in. At your first log-in, you will be prompted to set up a new password and provide some contact information in case you lose it.
What if I lose my password?
There is a "Forgot your password?" option on the log in page. But if you get stuck and need help, you can call the Help Desk and someone there can reset it for you. The phone number for the UI&U Help Desk is 1-888-85-UNION.
What other features do I get with this?
There are a number of outstanding features with the Microsoft Live system and honestly, we've only started to explore them all. I'll mention my favorite is Skydrive. As a UI&U learner or alum, you get 25 GB of free online storage to back up your files (most systems offer 5 GB for free). To get to Skydrive, visit http://skydrive.live.com and use your new UI&U e-mail address login (e.g. John.smith@email.myunion.edu).
How long will my new account work?
This is part of our "E-mail for Life" initiative. We know it is impossible to promise something for life- especially in a world where technology changes. But in this case, Microsoft says they have committed to making this service available to all students and alumni for free forever. For that reason, you can expect that your Union account will be around for a long time- as long as you are a current learner, or an alum of UI&U.
This sounds too good to be true. Is it?
We thought so too. Microsoft is clearly using this as a marketing tool to extend their name to universities, in keeping with their long-time support of educational institutions. I would recommend you log into http://www.windowslive.com to explore all the services that are available as part of this system. I'm sure they will send some marketing information from time to time, but it shouldn't be overwhelming and you should be able to opt out of all of it.
What about SPAM and Anti-Virus?
Microsoft takes care of both SPAM e-mails and viruses using their robust server systems.
Account.live.com
The best place to change your password, edit your information, and access all the other resources at the LIVE site is http://account.live.com . Simply log into this page with your @email.myunion.edu account and you will see the Live Account page. From this page, you can change the following: - Your password (and password reset options) - Marketing Preferences (use this link to turn off the junk mail Microsoft wants to send you) - Your alternate e-mail address (in case you forget your password)
