The Information Technology department does not sell software, computers, or accessories, but we are frequently asked for recommendations. Please note that even though we recommend these, the university is not liable or responsible for any purchases that you make.

Windows 7 Discount for Colleges
College students, faculty and staff can buy Windows 7 for only $64.95.  Visit http://www.win741.com for more information.  Also, students can purchase Microsoft Office for only $59.95 at "The Ultimate Steal" (a Microsoft site).

Discounted Software
To receive software discounts, please visit the JourneyEd website.  A copy of your Union ID (available via CampusWeb) is required for discounted purchases.

Laptop Computer
The recommended laptop for learners at Union Institute & University is the Sony Vaio. This is a very good multi-media laptop. 

Camera
The standard web conferencing camera is the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000. This camera also will work with the MacOS version 10.5 or newer. 

Phone Equipment
If you are taking part in long audio conference calls, we recommend you consider a headset (with microphone).  Many cordless phones have a headset jack for connecting a headset. These are not standards or requirements- just suggestions to make your experience more comfortable.

Bibliographic Software
These software programs will help you keep track of your references and bibliographies when you are writing papers and conducting research. Quantitative Research Software
Quantitative research software is primarily for conducting statistical analyses. Software vendor sites with information about the packages:

  • SAS
  • STATA - Stata has complete statistical, graphical, and data-management capabilities and is also fully programmable. Used by researchers of all disciplines. Online courses about using Stata are available for free.
  • StatLib - From the Department of Statistics at Carnegie Mellon, this collection contains a variety of software, macros, and data sets written in Fortran, C, and Lisp.
