Tuition & Payment Options

May, 2011

Dear UI&U community

As is customary at this time of year, I write to inform you of Union’s tuition and fees schedule for the academic year, July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. We fully understand the economic pressures that all of us are under and our trustees, staff, and administration worked hard to find ways to avoid substantial increases in tuition. For fiscal year 2011-2012, I am pleased to announce that the trustees voted to approve an increase of only three (3) percent for our undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs.

Each year, our provost, deans, enrollment managers, and financial administrators examine options and prepare the budget with an eye to implement the smallest possible increase in tuition and fees. They work alongside our trustees and consider a variety of factors, including regional and national trends that review the factors that lead to increases, including the cost of energy, insurance, information technology, library materials, etc.

UI&U Tuition Increases Below National Average
UI&U’s increases are well below national averages. According to the Smart Student Guide to Financial Aid, (FinAid.org), the College Board states, “On average, tuition tends to increase about 8% per year. An 8% college inflation rate means that the cost of college doubles every nine years.” With this data, we are pleased that we were able to manage our budget and continue to improve service with such a small increase.

UI&U Works to Increase Scholarships
Union is also working hard to find ways to increase scholarships, and in fact will contribute more than $ 1.5 million this year to institutional scholarships across all programs. Additionally, we continue our efforts to seek external support to provide additional support. We continue to partner with community colleges, law enforcement, and local chambers of commerce to provide tuition offsets. And, we have a number of named scholarships across our programs that support students with awards for merit and/or need.

Additionally, in our efforts to improve academic quality and student services, the university has expanded library databases and services. Last year’s conversion to a greatly improved student database system has improved access to student accounts and academic records. We have greatly increased the availability of online courses and options, and replaced much travel with audio and video conferencing, thereby reducing internal costs.

All tuition and fees payments must be submitted in the exact amount. Do not mail cash.

We strongly recommend paying all tuition and fees with a credit card, but a check or money order payable to Union Institute & University is also acceptable. When a check is drawn on the account of a person other than the applicant, the name of the applicant must be entered onto the face of the check. If the application is submitted from outside the United States, remittance may be made by a bank international money order or foreign draft that is payable in United States currency, drawn on a financial institution located in the United States and made payable to Union Institute & University.

All personal checks and money orders must be drawn on a bank or other institution located in the United States and be payable in United States currency. Personal checks are accepted subject to collection. An uncollected check will render the application and any document issued pursuant thereto invalid. A charge of $25.00 will be imposed if a check in payment of tuition or fees is not honored by the financial institution on which it is drawn.

If you wish to wire funds from your bank directly into Union Institute & University’s bank, please contact the Business Office at 800.861.6400, ext 1095, for detailed instructions.
