Donovan Myrie, Ph.D. Program
Fontaine Maury Belford Scholarship Recipient

Donovan Myrie Doctoral learner Donovan Myrie is no stranger to success. He came to Union with three Emmys, honors from both the Black Filmmakers Foundation and the National Association of Black Journalists, and more than 15 years experience in broadcast news outlets such as Time, Inc. and WNBC-TV. After two years enrolled in Union’s Ph.D. program, he knows he will graduate with a wealth of opportunities for an even more enriching, dynamic future—and the opportunity to make significant changes within his life and community.

Even now, Donovan sees his education come to life in his daily work as a full-time media and communications instructor at the University of Tampa, allowing him to give back to his students and his community in transformative ways.

“My studies, especially in social justice, humanities, and leadership, have already influenced my actions,” Donovan says. “I am currently helping to develop a new journalism program at my university and included two social justice components because of my experience at Union.” Donovan’s commitment to social justice also allows him to be an agent of change in his community while serving on the board of directors for Tampa Bay Public Access Television and working with both the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Humane Society.

Looking past graduation, Donovan plans to complete his book, The 9/11 Project, possibly continue teaching or re-enter the television news business, or combine his skills for a multi-layered, interdisciplinary approach to life.  Whatever path he takes, he looks forward to transforming the world of media with both knowledge and passion and hopes to “bridge the gap between educators and working professionals” with his Union education.
