Using EndNote


EndNote is a bibliographic management software program which enables you to organize, store and retrieve your references, cite them in your written documents, and create bibliographies using various citation styles. EndNote is compatible with most of UI&U’s research databases.

The chart below describes the best retrieval method of bibliographic citations from UI&U’s various databases.

Direct Import

Search database and mark records that you want. Click "Send to Citation Mgr." Under format, make sure "Endnote" is selected and the "direct import" box is checked. Click "Download article Citation data. "

CSA Databases
(Sociological Abstracts)

Import

Search database and mark the records that you want. Click on "Save, Print, E-mail." Change "Short Format" to "Full format." Click on the "Save" button and save as a text file. Open up Endnote and "Select File>Import." In the Import Window, choose your saved file. In Import Option box select “Other Filters” and choose the appropriate CSA filter. Choose "Discard Duplicates" and click "Import."

EBSCOhost Databases

Export

Search database and click on "Add" to add records to your folder. Click on "Folder has items" to view your selected records. Click on "Export." Select "Direct Export to Endnote ."

Gale Databases
(Academic OneFile)

Export

Search database and mark the records that you want. Click on "Marked Items." Click on "How to Cite Marked Items." Choose "Export to Third Party Software." Check "Endnote." And press "Export."

H.W. Wilson Databases
(Fiction Catalog, Children's Catalog)

Import

Search database and select records that you want. Click on "Get Marked" to view your records. Click on "Print Email Save." Click on "Save Options." Under "Fields," choose "All citation fields." Under "Format," choose "Format for exporting to Bibliographic Software." Click "Save." Save the next screen as a plain text file. Open up Endnote and "Select File>Import." In the "Import" window, choose your saved file. In "Import Option" box select "Other Filters" and choose "WilsonWeb filter." Choose "Discard Duplicates" and click "Import."

JSTOR

Direct Export

Search database for articles. Click the "Save Citation" link under each article entry of those you want. When you have selected all the articles you want, click "View Saved Citations." Click "Directly export citations into EndNote."

LexisNexis

Enter Manually

LexisNexis is not compatible with Endnote, but you can “copy and paste” citation information into Endnote from a saved text file of downloaded citations.

(ERIC WorldCat, etc)

Direct Export

Search database and mark the records that you want. Click on "Marked Records" button to view your selected records. Click on "Export" button. Select Endnote for "Export to." When prompted, select an "Endnote library" to store your references. Select the appropriate Import Filter. Choose the filter that matches the database name and includes “OCLC FirstSearch”

ProQuest
(Dissertations and Theses)

Direct Export

Search database and mark records that you want. Click on the "Export" link in the yellow menu bar, just above the search results. Click on "Export directly to ProCite, EndNote, or Reference Manager." A dialog box will appear. Click "OK" to open up the file. When prompted, select an "EndNote library" to store your references.

PsychiatryOnline

Direct Export

Search database for articles. Click on the article link to open the abstract. On the right hand side, under "Services," click "Download to Citation Manager." Select "Endnote."

Direct Export

Search database and mark records that you want. Click on "Export Citations." Choose "Citations Only" and "RIS Format." Hit "Enter."
