WELCOME
The Gary Library provides a broad range of library services to the Union Institute & University (UI&U) and the Vermont College of Fine Art (VCFA) community, including a circulating book collection, online books, article databases, reference and research assistance, and interlibrary loan.
CIRCULATING PRIVILEGES
Learners, faculty, and staff members have access to print and electronic resources at the Gary Library. Learners on a leave of absence do not retain any library circulating privileges while they are on leave.
The loan period for all circulating materials is 45 days. Gary Library will ship circulating materials to borrowers living further than 30 miles from Montpelier.
Overdue materials are charged at a rate of 10 cents per item per day once they become 7 days overdue. Lost or damaged materials are subject to replacement charges at a rate of $50 per item.

ID & PASSWORD
You will need your ID and password to access the research databases. Please note: the online catalog uses a default setting of your ID as both the login and the password.
Union Institute & University: Your MyUnion ID is usually a six digit code and the password is the last four digits of your U.S. social security number.

Vermont College of Fine Arts: Your Gary Library ID is the last four digits of your VCFA student ID. Your Password is the last four digits of your U.S. social security number or 8232 if you don’t have a U.S. SSN. On the institution line select “VCFA” and click the “Login” Button.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN
If you cannot find the documents you need at our library, we can frequently obtain the documents from another library and send them to you.
Union Institute & University: Please visit the ILLiad Login Center to register for interlibrary loan privileges and submit requests.
Vermont College of Fine Arts: Requests, including title, author, and publication information, can be sent by e-mail (library@myunion.edu) or phone (802.828.8747 or 888.828.8557 x8747).
ACCESS TO OTHER ACADEMIC LIBRARIES
Many college and university libraries will allow anyone to use their library materials on an in-house basis and some will also extend guest borrowing privileges.
We can help you with the process of locating nearby libraries and provide you with a letter of introduction, if needed, that might help with your efforts to gain guest borrower privileges.
Find Books, Articles, and Other Scholarly Resources
PRINT BOOKS
1) Go to the Gary Library’s Online Catalog and search for books on your topic. When looking for a specific book, try using an author search and including only the author's last name. The search can be further refined by including a keyword from the title.
2) Click the checkmark icon and enter your ID twice to request the book.

ONLINE BOOKS
1) Go to the Gary Library’s Online Catalog and search for books on your topic.
2) Include the word: electronic.

3) In the search results, you will see book records with links underneath, which you can click to access the online book.

A SPECIFIC ARTICLE
1) Take note of the citation information (title, author, journal, volume, number, and year).
2) You will need to locate the journal that published your article. Search for the journal that published the article using the Journals by Title page. In the search results, you will see any databases that contain the journal.
3) Open one of the databases and scroll through the journal archive until you find the correct issue. You can also use the database’s “search within this publication” feature.
Please note: this is the best way to verify whether or not an article is in the Gary Library collection.
ONLINE ARTICLES
Databases by Subject page
1) Go to the Databases by Subject page.
2) Select your subject area from the drop-down menu.
3) Select an individual database and search for articles on your topic.
Google Scholar@Gary
1) Go to Google Scholar@Gary and login.
2) Search for articles on your topic.
3) Click the “Full-Text @ UI&U” link to access the article.

Please note: Google Scholar is an externally provided service, which is currently in BETA phase. If clicking “Full-Text @ UI&U” does not bring you to your article, use the Journals by Title page to locate your article (please see the instructions for finding a specific article).
