Interlibrary Loan

ILLiad Login Center: Submit requests, renew items, and receive electronically delivered document.

Interlibrary Loan is a cooperative venture between UI&U’s Gary Library and other libraries to give you access to materials that we do not have available here at the library. You may request items such as books, journal and newspaper articles and microfilmed materials.

ILLiad allows you to request, manage, and access all of our Interlibrary Loan materials online by logging in with your MyUnion ID and password. The first time you log in you will be asked to provide some basic contact information. This information is only required the first time you use ILLiad.

Login or Register
Please follow the directions below to log into ILLiad and submit your request electronically.
• Connect to ILLiad (the ILLiad Username is your six digit MyUnion ID and the password is the last four digits of your SSN if you have never changed the password). Contact Computer Services [help AT myunion dot edu] for help with your ID and password.
• To set up your account, complete the form and click on Submit Information button, you only have to do this the very first time you use ILLiad.

how to submit a request

Don’t forget to first search for books in the Online Catalog by title or author, or for journals in the Journals A-Z Directory by title or ISSN, to see if the Gary Library owns what you are requesting.

Electronic forms are available online just by logging onto ILLiad with your MyUnion id and password.

When filling out the request forms, please provide as much information as you can. There are some required fields, so be sure to complete them.

borrower information

All borrowers in good standing may make use of this service.

Learners residing outside the 48 contiguous states of the U.S. only have access to photocopies via our interlibrary loan department. For liability reasons, books and any other circulating items borrowed via interlibrary loan may not be mailed to learners residing beyond this region.

Learners on leaves of absence (including medical leaves) do not have access to our interlibrary loan services.

Special note about library privileges: It is important for all library borrowers to recognize the fact that interlibrary loan services are a privilege reserved for individuals with a demonstrated record of responsible borrowing activities. In cases when individuals requesting interlibrary loan materials have a past record of consistent lateness in returning any circulating library materials, the library reserves the right to limit the number of interlibrary loan requests that will be processed at any particular time. In extreme cases of flagrant and chronic abuses of established circulation and/or interlibrary loan policies, the library reserves the right to deny access to interlibrary loan services altogether.

turnaround time and loan period

The average turnaround time is 1-2 weeks. The typical loan period is 30 days, but the loan period is set by the lending library and may vary. Please keep in mind when requesting library materials via interlibrary loan that you will lose some borrowing time due to shipping.

The due date for all items retrieved via interlibrary loan will appear on a paper band covering the item in question. Please do not remove this paper band from the item. Photocopied items become the property of the requester and do not need to be returned.

fees

Photocopies of items obtained via interlibrary loan are charged at a rate of 10 cents per page. In the rare event that the charges are higher, the requester will be notified in advance.

Copies of dissertations and theses that are not available in the Full Text Dissertations and Theses Database can be ordered via interlibrary loan for an average fee of $15.00 - $20.00, depending on the document and availability.

renewals, returns, overdues, and lost items

You can renew interlibrary loan materials by logging onto ILLiad.

Books and other circulating items borrowed via interlibrary loan must be returned to the Gary Library interlibrary loan department so that they can be processed and shipped back to the lending library.  As with all books borrowed from the Gary Library, you are responsible for returning interlibrary loan materials (unless they are electronically delivered to you). Please review our returning recommendations on how to properly send your books back. Returned materials should be shipped to: Tess Zimmerman, Gary Library 62 Ridge Street, Suite 2, Montpelier VT, 05602

Union Institute & University Library
62 Ridge Street, Suite 2 Montpelier, VT 05602
Photocopies made by other libraries on behalf of our borrowers become the property of the borrower and do not need to be returned. It is not our policy to borrow circulating items from other libraries if they are already owned by the Gary Library.

If items borrowed via interlibrary loan become overdue, the library will not process any outstanding or subsequent requests for interlibrary loan materials for that individual until such time as all overdue interlibrary loan items are returned and all associated overdue fines are paid.

Patrons who lose an interlibrary loan book will be charged a non-refundable fee of $50.00 or more, depending on the charge from the lending library. Borrowers who fail to return items borrowed via interlibrary loan may have their interlibrary loan privileges suspended.

Types of materials available

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Office obtains from other libraries and commercial suppliers, books, articles, and other materials not available in the Gary Library.

Very recently published books tend to be difficult to obtain via interlibrary loan, mostly because libraries usually reserve newly purchased items for their own primary clientele and will not allow them to circulate to other libraries via interlibrary loan.

Other difficult items to locate, because of other libraries’ circulation polices include:

  • Films
  • Videocassettes
  • Audiocassettes
  • Dissertations

Please contact the interlibrary loan librarian with any questions regarding requesting certain materials.
