Please note that Commencement is a ceremony that celebrates your academic achievements, not certification of graduation. You must satisfy all of your degree requirements before you officially graduate and receive your diploma and transcript.

Criteria for Participation

Please note that Commencement is a ceremony that celebrates your academic achievements, not certification of graduation. You must satisfy all of your degree requirements before you officially graduate and receive your diploma and transcript.

To be eligible to participate in commencement, one of two conditions must be met:

You have completed your degree requirements and received your diploma, but have not participated in a past commencement

or

You are currently registered in your final term or sessions (For undergrads: Spring/Summer Term and/or Spring/Summer Session I and/or II which ends August 24, 2014)

NOTE: If you have an outstanding financial obligation exceeding $1000.00, please contact Miles Scott in the Business Office in our Cincinnati headquarters at 1-513-487-1291, or by selecting Option 1 when calling the Business Office at 1-800-861-6400 x1095. The Business Office can arrange a payment plan to fulfill your financial requirement. A financial hold will not prohibit your approval to participate in the commencement ceremony. However, you must have your financial obligations to the University satisfied before obtaining official graduation status, receiving your diploma and academic transcripts.

All eligible students and recent graduates will receive a packet of information including a Petition to Commence form and a timetable. Once your dean has approved you for commencement, you may order your regalia, invitations, class rings, diploma frames, etc. (online through a secure site hosted by Herff Jones). Your financial obligation can only be processed through the Business Office in Cincinnati, Ohio. Please contact the student account manager, 800-486-3116 x1187 | businessoffice@myunion.edu.

Regalia

Once you have received official notification that you are eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony, you will be given access to the Herff Jones regalia ordering site. Undergrads and Master’s graduates order ‘keepers’ rather than rentals (about $30 for BA/BS and about $ 60 for MA/MAP/MEd). Doctoral candidates can either rent (about $70 for PhD/PsyD/EdD) or purchase custom regalia once they have officially graduated.

Doctoral commencers also have the option to purchase all or part of the custom regalia (view the regalia here — scroll down to see the photo of the doctoral regalia). You can purchase the gown, hood, cap, tassel for a little over $1,000.00, but you can also order just the tam and tassel, or the hood, etc. for about $200-$300. You can do that in advance or at during the weekend. Our Herff Jones rep will also be in attendance during the weekend, so you can purchase a tam prior to the procession line up. Many elect to do so, because the rental doctoral regalia comes with a flat mortar board.

Alumni in good standing can order custom regalia at any time. The order for full gown, hood, tam/tassel is about 8 weeks and the cost is about $1100. Contact event.coordinator@myunion.edu for information and to get in touch with the Herff Jones representative.
