What is a Self-Study?
The self-study is a collective effort between UI&U and The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC).  The self-study is designed to address the HLC criteria to earn continued accreditation while at the same time moving UI&U forward.  Everyone at the University is invited to participate.  Over the last two years, members of the Union community have gathered, evaluated, and anlyzed evidence to create a clear statement of strengths and challenges, never losing sight of or contact with the mission, vision, values, and principles that provide us with distinction and direction.

HLC defines a successful self-study as having the following attributes:

  • Fits the distinctive nature of the organization
  • Achieves stated goals that guide the design and the conduct of the process
  • Ensures effective evaluation of the whole organization
  • Promises to have an impact on the organization beyond the Commission visit
  • Engages multiple constituencies of the organization
  • Builds naturally on existing and ongoing self-evaluation processes
  • Has strong presidential and board support
  • Draws on the expertise and credibility of recognized leaders throughout the organization
  • Maintains regular and effective communication links with organizational constituencies
  • Produces evidence to show that the Commission’s Criteria for Accreditation are met
  • Produces a self-study report that meets the Commission’s needs
  • Testifies to the organization’s commitment to peer review
